This first model is designed to carry an M2 50 cal. on the turret with the observer mounting a 7.62mm M-60 externally at the observers hatch at the rear top deck. It has Chevrolet 283 cubic inch V-8 gasoline engine that develops 160 hp (120k/W). Operational range is 443 km. The power to weight ratio is 23 hp/ ton. Combat weight is 15,000 lb (6,800 kg) It has a crew of 3. This track can swim propelled by its tracks and it can be air dropped by parachute. The commander;s hatch rotates 360 degrees. This type saw service in Vietnam but was withdrawn because it could not keep up with the larger M113. It remained in service in Europe where it did not have the steep banks of the many jungle streams and rivers to deal with. The nose overhang was not at the correct angle for the M114 to climb out of a steep banked stream.
